Program Presentation

Nowadays, images occupy an important space in communication. While technological advancements in digital cameras and smartphones provide many conveniences, knowledge of techniques, composition, and photographic language is essential for learning how to tell visual stories, represent information through photographs, interpret these representations, and create works of art.

The Photography program offers high-level training with a variety of resources for developing skills in this sector.

The training covers both basic and advanced aspects, enabling participants to plan, develop, and complete a photographic project, or address professional needs by integrating photography as a tool in their work tasks.

Additionally, the course offers flexible training paths, allowing students to choose the areas of knowledge that are most useful or interesting to them.

Who is the programme for?

The program is aimed at students, professionals, or photography enthusiasts who wish to broaden their knowledge of the field. Mainly:

  • Professionals in the fields of Communication, Arts and Social Sciences interested in broadening and deepening their knowledge of photography.
  • Professionals from different areas, with or without experience in the sector, who seek to develop new communication techniques based on professional photography.

Diploma

The successful completion of the program will lead to the awarding of the Specialist Course in PHOTOGRAPHY.

Upon successful completion of the Program, the student will receive the degree issued by the university where they have enrolled.

Program Structure

The credit structure of the Photography program is shown in the following table. It should be noted that the duration is merely indicative, as the methodology followed integrates the knowledge and skills to be acquired in each part through integrative exercises of knowledge acquisition and internalization of project practices:

a. The equivalence in credits may vary according to the university where the student has enrolled. One (1) ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit is equivalent to 10 + 15 hours. If the student is enrolled in a university that does not belong to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the relation between credits - hours may vary.

Duration

The Photography program has 28 credits.

The duration of the Photography program varies between 9 a 12 months, depending on the student’s commitment. During this period, the student must have successfully passed all the corresponding evaluations as well as the Final Project, if any.

Objectives

General objective

Master the general knowledge of photography considering technical skills, composition, lighting and digital development for different professional applications.

Specific Objectives

  • Master the techniques of composition and lighting in photography.
  • Learn about the history and theories about photography.
  • Introduction to digital development criteria and techniques.
  • Know the characteristics and strategies of different areas of professional photography.
  • Learn how to plan and carry out photo shoots.

Career Opportunities

Photography prepares students to develop their professional practice in different fields of photography such as photojournalism, advertising, architecture, documentary, social, educational and scientific.

This itinerary aims to offer a solid education on the knowledge and practices of photography as applicable in a social environment. The itinerary is focused on professionals interested in using photography professionally in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Information Sciences.

Description of the Subjects

MODULE OF COMPULSORY SUBJECTS

  1. THEORIES AND HISTORIES OF PHOTOGRAPHY

    This subject presents the concepts, histories and theories that have contributed to the development of photography as a practice and knowledge. This subject provides the knowledge to understand the photographic language and the development of its devices and applications.

  2. BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY

    This subject provides training in the fundamental aspects of photography, focusing on camera operation, composition rules, branches of application, and technical aspects of photography.

  3. LIGHTING

    This subject presents knowledge on the characteristics of light, lighting, and the equipment necessary to create variable environments for both studio and flash photography.

  4. DIGITAL DEVELOPMENT

    This subject offers knowledge on practices and techniques for the digital development of photographs, focusing on key aspects of the workflow, along with essential concepts and tools for photographic development.

OPTIONAL ITINERARY

  1. CREATIVE DOCUMENTARY

    This subject explores the development of documentary photography, particularly focused on current events, with a more creative and conceptual approach. Various work styles and processes are analyzed.

  2. JOURNALISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

    This subject addresses multiple aspects of professional practice, including its requirements, techniques, and applications, as well as knowledge of the history of photojournalism.

  3. ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY

    This subject covers the fundamental aspects of advertising photography, from the initial concept to the final product. Specific cases are presented to illustrate the work routine.

  4. SCIENTIFIC PHOTOGRAPHY

    This subject introduces knowledge and techniques of photography applied to various scientific fields, serving as a tool to enhance communication, information, research, and expression in the scientific domain.

  5. VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY

    This course offers knowledge about photography as an anthropological, ethnographic, and social science research practice. Its role as a symbolic means of interaction and knowledge production, integrated into the social system, is analyzed.

  6. PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT

    This subject explores photographic project management practices based on concepts and tools specific to the area, as well as the types of projects and their production processes.

Management

  • Dr. (c) Michelle Moreira Soares. Photographer, journalist, and teacher. Extensive university training, with research experience in photography, body, and representation, especially in the field of Visual Anthropology. She has received scholarships and participated in social projects in different places.

General Academic Coordination

  • Dr. (c) Ligia María Lee Guandique. Degree in International Relations from Universidad Rafael Landívar, Guatemala. Master's Degree in Political Science from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Teaching staff and Authors

  • Laia Moretó Alvarado. Multidisciplinary artist with extensive training in photography and various national awards and recognitions and participation in residencies and international conferences. Extraordinary career award and candidate for extraordinary master’s degree award. Has taught at high school, university and photography schools.
  • Esteban Toro Martínez. Travel documentary photographer, ambassador for Sony, photographer for Adobe Lightroom, nominator for the World Press Photo 6x6 Global Talent, represented worldwide by YellowKorner Gallery, explorer and leader of photographic expeditions around the world.
  • Citlali Fabián. Photographer and visual artist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Photography and a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts. Has published in various media such as New York Times, LA Times, Cuartosturo magazine, among others. Work has been exhibited in several countries, such as Mexico, the United States, Spain, Holland and Argentina.
  • Miren Pastor. Bachelor in Fine Arts and Master in Photography. Has self-published three photobooks, exhibited projects in various international venues and in 2016 won the "ING Unseen Talent Award Public Prize". Currently organizes the Fiebre Photobook Festival and is part of the La Troupe collective.
  • Ricardo Pinzón Hidalgo. Photographer with a background in Advertising and a Master's Degree in Photography, with 23 years of experience in advertising and editorial photography, as well as experience as director of photography in magazines, including Esquire Colombia.

The Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (FUNIBER) periodically allocates an extraordinary economic item for FUNIBER Scholarships.

To apply for the scholarship, please complete the information request form on FUNIBER's website or contact the office branch in your country, who will inform you if it is necessary to provide any additional information.

Once the documentation is received, the Evaluation Committee will examine the suitability of your application for financial aid as awarded by the FUNIBER Scholarship.
